MBABANE – The Ministry of Health has stepped up its efforts to fight malaria after a rise in cases was reported in some parts of Eswatini.

Since July 2024, a total of 296 malaria cases have been confirmed, with most reported in the Hhohho and Lubombo regions. Sadly, four lives have been lost. The disease has been found mostly in areas like Mhlangatane, Madlangempisi, Nkilongo, Sithobela, and Hlane.

Health experts say the increase is due to more mosquitoes, which breed in warm, rainy conditions. Some people may also bring the disease into the country after visiting malaria-prone areas.

But there is good news: the Ministry of Health is taking strong action to stop the spread.

Here’s what’s being done:

• Homes are being sprayed to kill mosquitoes.

• Free mosquito nets are being given out.

• Health workers are testing more people and teaching communities how to stay safe.

• Doctors and nurses are receiving extra training to treat malaria quickly and properly.

The Ministry is asking the public to help by:

– Allowing spraying teams to enter their homes.

– Sleeping under mosquito nets every night.

– Going to a clinic right away if they have symptoms like fever, chills, or headaches.

– People who travel to other countries are also reminded to take medicine to prevent malaria before and during their trip.

“We are working hard to protect every liSwati,” said Communications Officer Nsindiso Tsabedze. “But we need everyone’s support to win this fight.”

Malaria is preventable and treatable. With teamwork and care, Eswatini can overcome this challenge and keep moving toward a healthier future.
