MBABANE – The first batch of the groundbreaking HIV and AIDS injectable drug, Lenacapavir (LEN), has officially arrived in the Kingdom of Eswatini.

The consignment was received by the Minister of Health, represented by Minister Apollo Maphalala, marking a major milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to prevent new HIV infections. The official rollout of the long-acting injection will begin at Hhukwini Inkhundla on 1 December 2025.

A Powerful New Prevention Option

Lenacapavir introduces a new frontier in HIV prevention. Administered only twice a year, the injectable PrEP offers long-lasting protection for individuals at high risk of HIV. This makes it particularly suitable for people who struggle with daily oral PrEP, face stigma, or prefer a discreet and convenient prevention method.

The drug works by blocking HIV from entering and multiplying in human cells. Its unique mechanism gives it strong and sustained effectiveness, with global studies showing highly promising results.

Key advantages of Lenacapavir PrEP include:

  • Two injections per year for continuous protection
  • High efficacy validated through global clinical trials
  • More privacy and convenience, reducing the burden of daily pills
  • A strong option for women, youth, and key populations who remain disproportionately affected

Strengthening Eswatini’s Progress

Eswatini has made significant strides in reducing HIV infections and improving treatment outcomes. The arrival and upcoming rollout of Lenacapavir stands as further proof of the country’s commitment to strengthening its HIV response with cutting-edge solutions.

Health workers have been undergoing training, and facilities are being prepared to ensure a smooth introduction of the injection. The Ministry of Health, along with regional and international partners, continues to prioritize widening prevention choices and making services more accessible.

Maphalala’s reception of the first batch signifies government readiness and national confidence in the value of this new prevention tool.

A Meaningful World AIDS Day Rollout

Launching Lenacapavir on 1 December 2025, which is World AIDS Day, amplifies the importance of this advancement. The symbolic timing reinforces Eswatini’s determination to reduce new HIV infections and protect future generations using the most advanced technologies available.

Hhukwini Inkhundla has been selected as the launch site, serving as the starting point before the programme expands to the rest of the country.

A Bright Step Toward an AIDS-Free Future

With the first batch now in Eswatini and rollout preparations advancing, Lenacapavir is set to empower communities with stronger, longer-lasting protection. The introduction of this injectable PrEP marks a new chapter in the national HIV response—one that brings Eswatini even closer to achieving an AIDS-free generation.
