MBABANE – Eswatini is set to benefit from a major education boost as the Government of Japan funds the construction of four new secondary schools one in each region, under a grant project aimed at expanding access to quality education.

The project, “Improvement of Secondary Schools,” is one of the largest education-focused grants Eswatini has received from Japan and is expected to transform rural communities by providing modern learning facilities and driving local economic activity.

Minister of Economic Planning and Development Dr. Thambo Gina, representing the Government of Eswatini, revealed the development during the signing ceremony of the Exchange of Notes between WFP Eswatini and the Government of Japan, held today July 30, 20225 at the UN House, Mbabane.

“This project will not only improve education access but also boost local economies through job creation and increased activity around the construction sites,” said Dr. Gina.

He highlighted Japan’s consistent support in advancing Eswatini’s development goals, particularly in education, health, food security, and clean water access.

Dr. Gina also acknowledged Japan’s swift humanitarian response, especially amid rising food and nutrition insecurity. He referenced last year’s report that 20 per cent  of Eswatini’s population faced acute food insecurity, requiring urgent assistance.

“The support fully aligns with our National Development Plan 2023/24–2027/28, which prioritizes the rights and well-being of orphans and vulnerable children,” he added.

Japan remains a key development partner for Eswatini, playing a vital role in delivering progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and uplifting communities nationwide.
