MBABANE – The Eswatini National Association of Journalists (ESNAJ) has raised its voice firmly against threats directed at Eswatini Observer journalist, Bongiwe Dlamini.
The threats, reportedly made by Cuddle Puddle Director, Mr. Horst Sayler, followed Dlamini’s coverage of a tragic drowning incident involving a three-year-old child.
ESNAJ did not mince words, declaring that “a threat against one journalist is a threat against the entire profession.”
The association emphasized that intimidation of journalists undermines not just individual safety, but also the very pillars of democracy and accountability.

A Call for Accountability
ESNAJ has demanded a public apology from Mr. Sayler to Bongiwe Dlamini, the Eswatini Observer, and the broader journalism fraternity. Should this not be forthcoming, ESNAJ vowed to pursue legal and institutional measures to protect its members.
Defending Democracy Together
“Let it be known that threatening one journalist is threatening us all,” the association stressed. ESNAJ reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to stand with journalists, defend members against intimidation, and safeguard press freedom in Eswatini.
This bold statement highlights the unity and resilience of the local media fraternity. It also reminds the nation that a free press is not just the right of journalists, it is the right of every citizen who depends on truth, accountability, and transparency for a stronger democracy.
