MBABANE– In a thrilling turn of events for the opera world, Eswatini’s own Thandolwethu Mamba has made his international debut as a leading opera singer at Opera Wilmington, a prestigious event hosted at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW).
The production of Don Giovanni, which runs on July 18, 20, 25, and 27, 2025 at UNCW’s Mainstage Theatre, has already captivated audiences. Mamba, in the role of Don Giovanni, not only showcased his incredible vocal talent but also brought a profound emotional depth to the character. His journey to this moment is as inspiring as it is remarkable.
Growing up in Mbabane, Eswatini, he discovered his passion for opera through an unexpected source: a friend’s mother’s computer. “We’re a long way from the boy who fell in love with this work through the tiny screen, but the feeling of wonder and excitement is still as potent, if not more,” he reflected.
Don Giovanni, directed by the talented Nancy King, is celebrated for its complex characters and rich musical landscape. Mamba’s portrayal of the infamous seducer has garnered acclaim, as he infused the role with charisma while navigating its darker elements with a nuanced understanding. “This has been, and continues to be, an adventure of discovery, challenges, triumphs, and trust in and within myself,” he shared, highlighting the transformative nature of his experience.
Just days before the opening night, Mamba and his castmates experienced a moment of pride during their final dress rehearsal. “Thank you, Dr. Stephen Lutz, for these wonderful photos from our final dress rehearsal. In bocca al lupo a tutti,” he expressed—a phrase meaning “break a leg” in Italian. The excitement in the air was palpable as Opera Wilmington posted, “Happy Opening Night! What a dream it has been for our cast and crew to put on this show.”
Mamba’s journey from the humble beginnings in Eswatini to the grand stage of Opera Wilmington is a testament to his talent and determination.
