BUHLENI – Mayiwane Member of Parliament (MP) Sicelo Prince Dlamini has called for subjects, Home Economics and Agriculture to be made compulsory in schools.

He said pupils must not be forced to choose between the two subjects emphasizing the importance of both. He said this during the handover of the borehole at Matfuntini Primary School on Tuesday (9 July 2024).

Dlamini was addressing some of the pending issues in schools that needed the attention of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Dlamini highlighted the potential for self-employment in both fields admits high unemployment rates. He advocated for both subjects to be taught concurrently to provide broader opportunities for students.

However, the Acting Director for the Ministry of Education, Richard Dlamini explained that the decision to have students chooses between Agriculture or Home Economics alongside Expressive art introduced in 2022 was due to practical constraints.

“Expressive Art was seen as a crucial modern skill set, necessitating a choice between the other two subjects to balance educational demands effectively,” Dlamini said.

When interviewed by this publication the MP continued to emphasize that through Agriculture and Home Economics, children can make a living in this country as compared to expressive art which is a developing skill subject.
