MALAWI DELEGATION VISITS ESWATINI TO STRENGTHEN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COOPERATION

MBABANE The Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) today welcomed a delegation from the Malawi Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The visit aims to strengthen collaboration in science, technology, and innovation between the two countries.

The Malawi delegation is led by Professor Chomora Mikeka, Director of Science, Technology and Innovation. Other members include Dr. George Vakusi, Deputy Director of Basic Education, and Mr. William Ngwira, Chief Science and Technology Officer. The delegation is in Eswatini to benchmark on the Kingdom’s national system of innovation and explore opportunities in ICT, industrialisation, agriculture, and water development.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry, Acting Principal Secretary Sabelo Dlamini highlighted the importance of collaboration for Africa’s digital transformation. He said, “Innovation is no longer optional, it’s the key to unlocking our shared future.” He added that both nations share visions for industrialisation and digital advancement, and that this visit provides a platform for joint initiatives.

During the meeting, Eswatini shared progress on its National Strategy for the Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolutions and its Artificial Intelligence Policy. These initiatives aim to build a smart, future-ready nation by integrating advanced technologies in health, agriculture, education, manufacturing, and public services.

Professor Mikeka praised Eswatini’s achievements in science and technology. He noted the Kingdom’s role in hosting the SADC University of Transformation and highlighted the progress observed during the recent visit of an Eswatini delegation to Malawi. The Malawian team has also engaged with key officials, including the Minister of Higher Education, Honourable Dr. Jessie Kabwila, during previous exchanges.

The delegation emphasized the importance of mutual learning. Professor Mikeka said Malawi seeks to learn from Eswatini’s innovative approaches while sharing its own experiences in building a resilient science and technology ecosystem. The visit is expected to result in a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries, laying the foundation for future cooperation in ICT, industrialisation, agriculture, and water development.

Acting PS Dlamini welcomed the delegation, describing their visit as an opportunity to pave the way for a brighter future for both nations through science, technology, and innovation.
