MANZINI – Half of Eswatini’s maternal deaths in five months were recorded in Manzini, prompting health authorities to hold a critical post-mortem meeting for nurses and doctors to find solutions.
The Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) Programme in the region, supported by UNFPA Eswatini, convened the session for midwives and other health practitioners from hospitals and clinics across Manzini.
The meeting aimed to reflect on practices, identify gaps, and develop strategies to prevent further loss of mothers’ lives.

SRH Manzini’s Nomathemba Ginindza said the exercise was designed for self-introspection, not blame-shifting. She told reporters that health professionals needed to examine their actions and uncover factors contributing to the spike in maternal deaths.
“We want to reflect on where we may have gone wrong as health practitioners and identify the factors that have contributed to this situation. With different minds coming together, we believe the meeting will produce positive results and workable solutions,” Ginindza said.
The discussions are expected to inform practical measures to strengthen maternal health services in the region, improve clinical practices, and enhance patient outcomes.
UNFPA Eswatini praised the initiative, emphasizing that collaborative engagements like this are vital to reducing maternal mortality and ensuring safer pregnancies and deliveries.
The Manzini Regional Health Directorate confirmed it would closely monitor the implementation of recommendations from the meeting, with the goal of reversing the disturbing trend and protecting mothers’ lives.
