MBABANE – Forget ‘glass’ slippers.
Meet Sikhulile Mavuso, a 28-year old man from Mbadlane under Malindza Umphakatsi, who has made a name for himself by using a needle and thread to create amazing craft.
His journey began at Entandweni High School, where he was a scholar.
Apart from books, Mavuso took interest in learning weaving by stitching soccer boots for the school team.
At first, it started as a hobby, but with the assistance of two teachers, Njabulo Simelane and Kwazi Mkhonta, it later developed into small business.
Immediately after the two educators saw Mavuso’s potential they invested in him. They this by buying him sewing equipment to modernise and improve his talent.
Mavuso’s new business adventure resulted to his classmates’ shoes getting a new lease of life.
Upon completion of his high school, Mavuso could not find a proper job.
“In 2018, I decided to take a leap of faith and turn my passion into a business, Umtukulu Hand Craft Investment.” he said.
The gamble paid off. Fuelled by dedication and love for shoemaking, Mavuso’s business grew.
According to him, he started designing and producing traditional Eswatini sandals, known as ‘tingwabela’.
He said he made designs for special occasions including weddings and traditional ceremonies.
He said he knew the importance of gaining knowledge on the business, hence he enrolled in training programs with Eswatini Co-operative Development College (ECODEC)and COSPE, to perfect his business management skills.
Mavuso narrated that he received mentorship from Kwakha Indvodza.
Mavuso has since encouraged young people to consider capacitating themselves with skills that could be converted into business.
He said strengthening vocational training and promoting skill development in schools to empower young people could be a solution to unemployment.
“Running a business is not all sunshine and rainbows. I also face challenges, but my passion and determination keep me going. My dream is to grow Umtukulu Hand Craft Investment and create jobs for others who share my vision,”said Mavuso.
