MBABANE – The Ministry of Health through Eswatini National Nutrition Council has strengthened efforts to fight malnutrition by training nurses in Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) across Eswatini.

The training was conducted through the Eswatini National Nutrition Council with support from the Japan Project via UNICEF. It concluded today  July 17, 2025, and aims to improve nutrition care at both facility and community levels.

Eswatini continues to experience rising cases of stunting, obesity, and micronutrient deficiencies. IMAM equips health workers with the skills to detect and manage malnutrition effectively.

So far, 25 trainers, 20 facility supervisors, and 26 CMIS champions and HMIS analysts have been trained. The next phase will target 20 health facilities, with 25 health workers expected to benefit at each facility.

The rollout aims to expand service coverage and ensure consistent, quality care throughout the health system.

CAREGIVERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO:

.Breastfeed exclusively for the first six months.

.Introduce safe and nutritious complementary foods from six months.

.Provide a balanced diet rich in essential vitamins and minerals.

.Take children for regular growth monitoring at clinics.

.Watch for signs of malnutrition such as fatigue, swelling, weight loss, or lack of appetite.

.Seek immediate care at the nearest health facility if malnutrition is suspected.

Malnutrition, if untreated, can result in stunted growth, poor brain development, and reduced school performance. It also increases the risk of diseases such as diabetes, heart conditions, and chronic fatigue. Emotional impacts include low self-esteem, social withdrawal, and delayed development.

Through IMAM training and increased community awareness, Eswatini is taking strong steps to end malnutrition. With continued efforts from both health workers and caregivers, every child can grow, learn, and thrive.
