MALINDZA – The Ministry of Home Affairs, in collaboration with various stakeholders, has taken proactive measures to address the recent surge of asylum seekers in Eswatini, particularly from Mozambique.

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Ministry held an awareness campaign at the Makhewu and Mlindazwe Royal Kraals yesterday, aiming to educate communities on the importance of reporting newcomers while fostering a culture of security and inclusion.

With the Lubombo Region experiencing a notable influx of individuals fleeing dire circumstances in neighboring Mozambique, the campaign sought to bridge the gap between host communities and asylum seekers. Ndumiso Kunene, a representative of the Ministry of Home Affairs, highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, “Reporting newcomers is crucial for community safety and integration. This is about protecting our communities while ensuring those seeking refuge are treated with dignity.”

The gathering featured informative sessions on the rights of asylum seekers and the procedures involved in their registration. Community members were introduced to confidential mechanisms for reporting newly identified individuals, ensuring safety for both residents and newcomers. The Ministry stressed the importance of this practice in promoting a harmonious coexistence while addressing security concerns.

Attendees were empowered with knowledge about the asylum-seeking process, helping to dispel common misconceptions and fostering a more empathetic approach to integration. The campaign also emphasized the shared responsibility of maintaining a secure environment that values every individual, whether a long-standing resident or a newly arrived asylum seeker.

The campaign resonated deeply with attendees, many of whom praised the Ministry’s efforts to engage directly with communities. The initiative reflects a broader commitment by the government to uphold Eswatini’s values of hospitality and inclusivity while addressing potential challenges posed by the rising number of asylum seekers.

“The awareness sessions were enlightening. It’s not just about reporting newcomers but understanding their circumstances and helping them integrate safely,” remarked a community member in attendance.

The Ministry of Home Affairs announced plans to extend similar campaigns to other parts of the Lubombo Region in the coming months. These efforts aim to create a unified approach to managing the complexities of asylum-seeking while ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.

As the country navigates the challenges of increasing migration, initiatives like this awareness campaign are paving the way for a more informed, vigilant, and compassionate society. By fostering understanding and collaboration, Eswatini demonstrates its commitment to human rights and community cohesion.

This campaign serves as a beacon of hope and a call to action, encouraging all citizens to play their part in building a secure and inclusive Eswatini.
