MBABANE – The Pigg’s Peak town is slowly taking shape.
Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo, today (Wednesday, December 4, 2024) officially commissioned the site for the much-anticipated Piggs Peak Factory earlier today.
This move marked a significant milestone in the country’s commitment to decentralization and inclusive economic development. It was reported that the project represents not just the construction of a factory, but a tangible step towards addressing the disparities in access to opportunities and services across Eswatini.
While speaking at the event, Khumalo mentioned that the factory shell was a manifestation of His Majesty’s Government’s dedication to bridging spatial gaps and reducing national inequality. He said, that through this initiative, the government aims to bring critical opportunities closer to communities, ensuring that the benefits of growth are shared across the country.
Minister Khumalo emphasised that this move was in direct response to the voices of the Emaswati, with policies now being crafted to deliver real and meaningful outcomes for the people.
“The establishment of this factory in Pigg’s Peak is a direct response to the needs of the people. By reducing spatial disparities, we ensure that every Swazi, no matter their location, can experience the benefits of national growth and development,” he said.
With the tendering process already initiated, the project is on track. Khumalo said ground-breaking ceremonies were scheduled for January 2025. The factory will serve as more than just a production site—it will catalyse regional development, provide essential infrastructure, and create valuable employment opportunities for locals.
Beyond creating jobs, the factory is expected to have far-reaching positive effects on various sectors. The retail, transport, housing, and local commerce industries stand to benefit significantly, further stimulating the local economy. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will also find fertile ground to grow, with the factory acting as a hub for industry and investment.
In addition, the Minister said the development aligned with the government’s broader vision of fostering inclusive economic growth that prioritizes the well-being of all citizens. By empowering communities and creating opportunities in previously underserved areas, the Piggs Peak Factory is a promising step toward a more equitable and prosperous Eswatini.
