MBABANE- The Nkwene Garden Scheme has resumed operations, marking a successful recovery just six months after floods brought farming activities to a halt. The turnaround was made possible through the efforts of Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla and support from the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and Micro Projects.

DPM first visited the garden in May 2025, she found that heavy rainfall earlier in the year had caused serious damage. The irrigation system had been blocked, leaving the 51 member cooperative unable to function.

Now, the DPM has returned to officially reopen the garden. She was joined by Minister of Tinkhundla Administration and Development Sikhumbuzo Dlamini, who is also the local Member of Parliament. The two leaders inspected the upgraded water system that draws from the Mkhondvo River, helped plant crops, and handed out seedlings to the farmers to help restart their activities.

During her address, DPM Dladla praised the women of the Nkwene Garden Scheme for their commitment and hard work. She shared that she had already spoken with the Chief Officer of NDMA, commending the members’ dedication. However, she warned that such progress could be at risk if future floods strike again. As part of ongoing efforts to reduce the impact of natural disasters, she assured the community that NDMA would return to reinforce the sides of the pipeline to prevent soil from clogging the system in the future.

The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the national importance of boosting food production, stating that ensuring food security aligns with His Majesty King Mswati III’s vision for the country.

The restoration project was funded by NDMA, with Micro Projects handling the technical revamp. Members of the scheme expressed great excitement, saying they can now return to selling produce to the public and local shops reviving their source of income.

Chairperson of the scheme, Thandi Nhleko, extended heartfelt gratitude to DPM Dladla for her support and dedication during their time of need. She also thanked Micro Projects and NDMA for their efforts and took a moment to honour His Majesty King Mswati III, wishing him a long life.

Deputy Prime Minister Dladla further encouraged the farmers to diversify their crops to include drought tolerant varieties such as maize, beans, and groundnuts, which require less water than vegetables. She added that NDMA and Micro Projects would continue to monitor the progress of the scheme and replace the remaining corrugated pipes with more durable materials.

“With your irrigation back in full operation, there’s no more waiting or rationing. Everyone can get to work and produce more for sale,” said the DPM.

Minister Dlamini committed additional support through the Regional Development Fund, promising to provide tools and equipment that would help boost productivity.
