MBABANE – Renowned Eswatini gospel artist, Nothando Shabangu-Dlamini, has achieved a significant milestone by being selected to perform at the prestigious Surajkund International Crafts Mela Festival in India.
The exciting news was officially announced by the Minister of Sports, Culture, and Youth Affairs, Bongani Nzima, during a send-off ceremony held at the ministry’s offices on February 3, 2025. The ceremony was for Eswatini’s cultural troupe, who are set to represent the kingdom at the festival.
A Global Cultural Showcase
The Surajkund International Crafts Mela, one of the world’s largest arts and culture festivals, will take place from February 7 to 23, 2025, marking its 38th edition. This festival attracts artisans, musicians, and performers from across the globe, providing a platform for cultural exchange.
Speaking at the event, Minister Nzima emphasized the significance of this opportunity for Eswatini’s cultural heritage:
“It is with great pride and excitement that we bid farewell to our esteemed cultural troupe. Their participation in this prestigious festival is more than just a performance—it is a representation of Eswatini’s rich cultural heritage on an international stage.”
He also extended gratitude to the Republic of India for sponsoring the trip, acknowledging the long-standing diplomatic and cultural ties between the two nations.
“Your continuous support in fostering cultural exchange is deeply valued. Such collaborations strengthen the relationship between Eswatini and India, and we are honored to be part of this grand celebration in the heart of India’s capital city.”
Encouraging the performers, Nzima urged them to leave a lasting impression:
“Our heritage is our identity, and it must be preserved for future generations. I challenge you to make an unforgettable impact so that Eswatini continues to receive invitations to international cultural festivals. Let your music, dance, and storytelling proudly showcase who we are.”
Dlamini’s Journey to the Mela Festival
In an exclusive interview, Nothando Dlamini shared her excitement about this career-defining opportunity. She recounted how a chance meeting with Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC) CEO, Stanley Dlamini, led to her selection.
“I met Mr. Stanley Dlamini at an event where we briefly discussed my music. He then encouraged me to submit my work for consideration at the Mela Festival. Fast forward to today, and here we are. I am deeply honored and grateful for this opportunity.”
Dlamini and the cultural troupe are set to depart for India this week.
