MBABANE – The Philani Maswati Charity Organisation has launched the “Adopt an Elderly” initiative, a transformative program aimed at supporting vulnerable elderly citizens across Eswatini.

The project, unveiled under the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Indlovukazi, seeks to foster compassion, community spirit, and selflessness. It focuses on providing essential care and dignity to elderly residents at the Philani Maswati Old Age Home in Mantjonga and other seniors in need.

Since the 1980s, Philani Maswati has partnered with the government of Eswatini to support disadvantaged communities. Through the new initiative, the organisation aims to raise E2,994,000 (about USD159,217) to deliver safe housing, medical care, food, and livelihood opportunities to elderly beneficiaries.

Innovative Ways to Contribute

Chairperson Lutfo Dlamini highlighted various ways supporters can get involved. Contributions can include adopting a room for E1,500 per month, sponsoring a home for E9,000 per month, or making one-time donations toward critical resources such as solar power systems, clinic equipment, or irrigation systems.

“Our goal is to encourage both local and international supporters to become part of this life-changing initiative,” Dlamini said. “Together, we can restore dignity, love, and care to those who need it most. Let us embrace Ubuntu—the shared humanity that defines Africanness.”

The organisation has detailed the costs required to sustain its programs. These include one-time expenses like solar power lighting (E200,000), solar water pumps (E240,000), and clinic equipment (E250,000). Annual costs include E108,000 for home maintenance, E1,260,000 for supporting elderly residents, and E60,000 for cleaning services.

Making an Impact

The initiative aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those targeting poverty (SDG 1), hunger (SDG 2), and health (SDG 3). With an emphasis on transparency and accountability, Philani Maswati ensures all contributions directly benefit the elderly.

Gogo Dora Hlophe, one of the beneficiaries, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the care she has received. “Philani Maswati has given me more than just a roof over my head; they’ve restored my dignity. I was alone and unwell, but now I have a home, regular meals, and people who care for me like family,” she said. “To all who support this organisation, thank you for making a difference in my life.”

Corporate entities have also played a significant role in the initiative’s success. A senior executive from a local financial institution praised Philani Maswati’s transparency and impact, stating, “Partnering with Philani Maswati has been deeply fulfilling. We’ve seen firsthand how our contributions transform lives. We encourage other businesses to join us in supporting this noble cause.”

Community members have echoed this sentiment. Sipho Mkhwanazi from Manzini described the organisation as a “source of national pride,” adding, “Philani Maswati represents the heart of Eswatini—caring for our elderly, empowering our youth, and uplifting women. Supporting them is an investment in the future of our nation.”

Philani Maswati is appealing for support from individuals, businesses, and international donors. Contributions can take the form of monthly sponsorships, one-time donations for infrastructure, or gifts of food, clothing, medical supplies, and furniture.
