MBABANE – Eswatini’s Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Senator Thulisile Dladla, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Phillip Morris International (PMI) for their generous donation of US$100 000 (approximately E1 848 647), which has been instrumental in rebuilding homes for families devastated by the December 6, 2023 storm.

Speaking at Maseyisini during an official ceremony on February 19, 2025, attended by senior PMI executives and government officials, the DPM highlighted the significant impact of the donation on the reconstruction and recovery efforts.

Rebuilding Lives and Communities

The unprecedented December storm left many families displaced, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly, people living with disabilities, and child-headed households. The DPM described how the storm had stripped many of their homes and sense of security, emphasising the far-reaching consequences of inadequate shelter on access to services, education, and economic opportunities.

Thanks to PMI’s contribution, 20 households have been reconstructed, providing safe and secure shelter to those who were most affected. Among these homes, two have been designated as Neighbourhood Care Points (NCPs), which serve as vital hubs offering nutritious meals and care to over 80 children in need. “These centres are not just buildings; they are lifelines to our children, ensuring that they receive the support they need to thrive and build a better future,” said Senator Dladla.

A Symbol of Partnership and Hope

The DPM praised PMI’s donation as more than just financial support. She described it as a symbol of solidarity and corporate responsibility, demonstrating how partnerships between governments and the private sector can address critical humanitarian challenges. “Phillip Morris International has shown that businesses, through their resources and commitment, can play a pivotal role in creating positive changes, especially in a humanitarian setting,” she said.

A Collaborative Path Forward

The ceremony was attended by key PMI representatives, including Vice President Christos Herpantidis and Vice President of Public Affairs Nevena Crljenko, as well as local leaders and government officials. Senator Dladla reaffirmed His Majesty’s Government’s commitment to ensuring that every citizen has access to a decent home, free from the threat of disaster, and conducive to a better quality of life.

“As we move forward, let this be a reminder that no challenge is insurmountable when we work together,” she concluded, expressing hope for continued collaboration with PMI and other partners to build a resilient Eswatini. The DPM also informed the attendants of the event that His Majesty the King expressed a desire to meet the leaders of the PMI, as they had proven that they wanted to be the country’s development partners.

A Lasting Impact

The donation and its outcomes will have long-term benefits, not only restoring dignity to those affected but also laying the foundation for stronger and more supportive communities. The homes and NCP centres constructed will remain symbols of compassion and action for years to come.

Phillip Morris International’s involvement highlights the potential of corporate social responsibility to effect tangible, meaningful change in vulnerable communities, and Eswatini’s government looks forward to fostering more partnerships like this in the future.

This marks a significant step forward in Eswatini’s efforts to recover from the storm’s devastation and strengthen its resilience to future challenges.
