MBABANE – Phiwayinkhosi Dlamini from Mbekelweni, under Ludzeludze Inkhundla, in the Manzini Region, has shown that it is possible for anyone to turn his passion into a successful business venture.

Dlamini, a driven student at the University of Eswatini (UNESWA), has successfully turned his childhood passion for selling into a flourishing business, Phiwa Curtains Home Improvement.

Located in his home place, Mbekelweni, Dlamini’s business specialises in sewing and installing curtains, as well as providing services for blinds, window cleaning, and bedding. Dlamini’s entrepreneurial journey began in high school, where he took the bold step of selling snacks to support himself.

This initial venture ignited a passion for sales that has only grown over the years. He later diversified his efforts by launching a clothing brand called Toe Tag Son, hosting events, selling sneakers, and even bottling still water.

His life took a pivotal turn when he met his brother, Ayanda Dlamini, in Durban, who introduced him to the world of curtains. Initially indifferent, Dlamini soon recognised his potential when he assisted Ayanda with a demanding workload, leading to his first curtain order in Eswatini.

Despite the challenges of competing with larger international brands, Dlamini is determined to carve out a niche for his business. “Customer satisfaction is what drives me,” Dlamini stated. He noted that he invested in high-quality materials and employed a skilled installation team to ensure his clients were happy with their purchases. Dlamini understands the importance of feedback in shaping his business practices and growth.

In a world increasingly dominated by social media, Dlamini has leveraged such social media platforms to promote his business effectively. He maintains a clean and organised online profile to foster trust and transparency with clients. Virtual selling has also proven to be a successful strategy, as he actively shares his passion for curtains with potential customers.

Dlamini acknowledged a common challenge faced by many talented curtain tailors: the struggle to market their work effectively. “I am hitting two birds with one stone, investing in marketing while sewing classic curtains,” he stated, highlighting his unique approach in a competitive industry.

As a young entrepreneur, Dlamini offers advice to aspiring business owners. “Go for it! Every situation you face becomes a lot lighter if you face it and go for it. Do not overthink because you will end up procrastinating,” he said.

His optimism extends to the home improvement and decor industry, which he believes presents vast opportunities for continuous learning and growth. Currently, Dlamini is balancing his academic responsibilities with the demands of his burgeoning business. By focusing on both school and his curtain venture, he aims to minimize the pressures of multitasking while laying the foundation for a successful future.

As he continues to grow Phiwa Curtains Home Improvement, Phiwayinkhosi Dlamini embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship, proving that with determination, creativity, and a commitment to customer satisfaction, success is within reach.
