EZULWINI – Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has placed State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) at the heart of Eswatini’s economic transformation, challenging them to embrace corporate governance, financial independence, and efficiency to drive national development.
Speaking at the Colloquium with State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) at Happy Valley Hotel today, 30 January 2025, the PM stressed the urgent need for SOEs to modernize, adapt, and take a leading role in the country’s ambitious economic vision.
“We cannot afford inefficiency in our public enterprises,” he stated.
“These institutions must be transparent, innovative, and accountable while embracing digital transformation, job creation, and public-private partnerships to accelerate Eswatini’s growth,” he said
SOEs as Drivers of Economic Growth
Under Eswatini’s National Programme of Action, SOEs are expected to:
✅ Improve Corporate Governance – Strengthen accountability and transparency.
✅ Enhance Financial Sustainability – Reduce reliance on government subsidies.
✅ Embrace Digital Transformation – Modernize operations to improve service delivery.
✅ Create Jobs & Foster Innovation – Invest in new industries and skills development.
✅ Form Strategic Partnerships – Collaborate with the private sector for investment and infrastructure growth.
The premier made it clear that SOEs must be at the forefront of industrialization and economic expansion, ensuring that Eswatini reaches its 12% economic growth target within the next five years.
A Vision for a Modern and Competitive Economy
Dlamini also highlighted major areas where SOEs can play a pivotal role, including:
Infrastructure Development – Expanding transport networks, energy, and digital connectivity.
Sustainability & Green Economy – Investing in clean energy and sustainable agriculture.
Economic & Industrial Growth – Strengthening key sectors like manufacturing, tourism, and ICT.
“We must think differently, act boldly, and redefine how public enterprises operate to make them drivers of growth, not financial burdens,” he stated.
A Call to Action: “Lead or Be Left Behind”
Dlamini urged SOE executives and board members to embrace the challenge, warning that inefficiency will no longer be tolerated.
“The time for change is now. SOEs must prove their worth by delivering results, driving innovation, and creating opportunities for emaSwati,” he asserted.
With a bold vision, clear strategies, and the right leadership, Eswatini’s State-Owned Enterprises are now positioned to lead the country into a new era of prosperity and competitiveness.
