MBABANE – The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) has expressed serious concern over reports of individuals and organizations exploiting refugees fleeing Mozambique.
In a statement released on January 3, 2025, Chief Police Information and Communications Officer, Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, cautioned that the law will take firm action against those engaging in such practices.
Vilakati acknowledged the ongoing political turmoil in Mozambique and its broader implications for safety and security in Eswatini and neighboring regions. “We are aware that certain groups and individuals are using this crisis as a pretext for criminal activities. The Police Service strongly warns against such actions that threaten national security,” she said.
She reaffirmed REPS’ commitment to safeguarding the peace and sovereignty of the country. “We are fully prepared to address any challenges arising from this situation,” Vilakati added.
REPS also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior or individuals to the authorities. “We urge citizens to promptly notify the relevant authorities about anyone seeking assistance under dubious circumstances,” Vilakati emphasized.
Reassuring the public, the Police Service reiterated its dedication to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
