MBABANE – Royal Eswatini Police Services (REPS), together with Young Hereos, took an initiative to provide crime prevention training for the newly elected community police from Siphocosini Constituency.
The training took place on Tuesday (July 16, 2024) at Siphocosini. This follows the arrest of six community police last week for taking law into their own hands by killing a person who had allegedly committed crime in the area. According to Young Hereos’ social media pages, the purpose of the lessons aimed to promote integration, capacitate the community police on relevant skills and professionalise their services to ensure that communities are safe.
In an interview with Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Service (EBIS), Director of Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in Young Heroes Nicky Mlangeni highlighted that high rate of crime in the area motivated them to take steps on how they could reduce the crime rate.
“Community police are not expected to take matters into their own hands. We noticed an increase in cases where community police dealt with criminals directly, and we saw an opportunity to mitigate such incidents,” Mlangeni said.
