MANZINI – Eswatini’s celebrated actress shares her journey from Nhlambeni to international acclaim
Setsabile Masina, one of Eswatini’s most resilient and inspiring voices in the arts, has added another crown to her achievements, this time quite literally by portraying Queen Lojiba in Shaka iLembe Season 2. Her captivating performance in the hit series has not only cemented her place among Eswatini’s top talents but also placed the kingdom on the global entertainment map.
“Being a part of Shaka iLembe, particularly in the role of Queen Lojiba, has been an incredibly rewarding experience,” Masina shared. “It feels like a privilege to portray such a significant historical figure and to contribute to a story that resonates with so many people.”

Raised in the quiet community of Nhlambeni, Manzini, Masina’s love for storytelling was nurtured through church dramatizations and poetry sessions led by her mother. She found her voice in performance long before the industry found her.
“Access to the arts was limited where I grew up, but I found solace in storytelling, music, and acting,” she said. “Through local workshops and performances, I began building my craft until eventually, I got my break into larger productions.”
Her role in Shaka iLembe was more than just a character; it was a lived experience.
“I didn’t have to think of getting into character. From the moment I was picked up from my house to the time I returned, I lived as Queen Lojiba. The star treatment, flights, private dressing rooms, being ushered on set, made me feel like royalty. It was top-of-the-game treatment,” she recalls with a proud smile.

One standout moment for Masina on set was filming emotionally intense scenes that showcased Queen Lojiba’s vulnerability and strength.
“There’s a scene where the queen confronts deep personal loss, it was raw, emotional, and unforgettable. Being surrounded by such a talented cast and crew made it easy to push my boundaries and grow as an actress.”
Despite her success, the road hasn’t been without hurdles. As a female artist, she’s navigated gender biases, limited funding, and societal expectations.
“Overcoming these challenges took resilience. I leaned on other women in the industry, sought mentorships, and advocated for more women in leadership. Our stories matter, and we deserve space to tell them.”

Masina has been a three-time award winner, recognized as Best Actress in both film and theatre by 50/50 NACA Awards, 2024 NACA, and the Matiwane Manana Arts Awards. She attributes part of her success to her involvement with Arterial Network Swaziland.
“Arterial Network Swaziland gave me access to collaborations, workshops, and vital networking platforms. It has shaped my growth and helped me understand the cultural depth of storytelling.”
To aspiring female artists in Eswatini, Masina’s message is clear and empowering:
“Believe in yourself and your voice. Embrace your passion and don’t be afraid to break barriers. Your dreams are valid.”
As Queen Lojiba on-screen and an icon of strength off-screen, Setsabile Masina continues to break ground, inspire young creatives, and lead the way for women in the arts in Eswatini.
