MBABANE – A Call for Unity Through Culture and Football.
The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) has encouraged the nation to rally behind the Ingwenyama Cup by wearing traditional regalia (Imvunulo) every Friday during the tournament period.
The unique tournament, which blends football with cultural competitions, kicks off this Saturday at various venues with football matches. The cultural segment of the competition will begin at a later date yet to be announced.
PLE Chairman Polycarp Dlamini appealed the last 32 draws held on Monday at the Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (SMVAF) offices in Mbabane.
“This tournament is unique globally, as it showcases football and our beloved culture. To show support, it would be wonderful to see the nation wearing traditional regalia on Fridays throughout the tournament. This will also demonstrate our pride in our culture,” Dlamini said.
Teams Embracing Culture
Last season, some teams creatively integrated cultural themes into their traditional regalia. Teams like Mbabane Swallows, Nsingizini Hotspurs, and Mbabane Highlanders stood out by designing kangas (emahiya) inspired by their team identities.
A Call for Infrastructure Development
Dlamini also called on the government to prioritize the construction of a large stadium. He directed this plea to officials from the Ministry of Sports, Culture, and Youth Affairs present during the draw.
“We urge the Ministry of Sports to consider building a bigger stadium capable of hosting major tournaments like the Ingwenyama Cup. This would also facilitate hosting other significant games, including national team matches. It would be an achievement to have such a facility ready by the time Eswatini celebrates 60 years of independence,” he said.
Culture Competition Registration Open
Culture Competition Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sandile ‘Msandi’ Nxumalo encouraged individuals interested in participating to register at their constituencies (Umphakatsi). Nxumalo noted that details about the competitions, including the selected songs, will be announced soon.
The cultural competitions feature traditional dances such as sibhaca and ummiso, as well as lutsango, timbongi, and lacwebetelako, among others.
The Ingwenyama Cup continues to be a celebration of Eswatini’s rich heritage, blending sport and culture to unite the nation. Show your support by wearing your Imvunulo every Friday and embracing this unique event.
