THE CABAL DEBATE—A REMINDER OF OUR COMMITMENT TO TRANSPARENT GOVERNANCE

MBABANE – The recent discussions surrounding the existence of a Cabal in Eswatini—sparked by an interview with His Excellency the Right Honourable Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini, published by the Eswatini Observer—have proven to be both fascinating and deeply educational. The arguments and counter-arguments raised over the past two weeks have clearly demonstrated one resounding truth: EmaSwati do not support the existence of any form of a Cabal that seeks to contaminate our country’s political and administrative structures.

The spirited national dialogue has served as a powerful affirmation that Eswatini’s democratic institutions—the Judiciary, the Legislature, and the Executive—remain firmly insulated from state capture. These conversations have provided assurance that, at least for now, our systems are secure from the undue influence of clandestine networks seeking to manipulate power for selfish gain.

However, an important distinction must be made. The presence of individuals or groups who operate like a Cabal—though they may not openly identify as such—is just as dangerous, if not more so. These actors often function covertly, wielding influence from the shadows, and operating like a “deep state” within the state. Their methods are subtle yet far-reaching, and their silence often masks a potent agenda aimed at seizing control over national decision-making and resource allocation.

Such individuals or groups often seek unchecked access to public resources, manipulating administrative and political processes to favor their interests. They resist transparency, fear exposure, and respond to scrutiny with aggression—using intimidation, coercion, and threats to maintain their grip on influence. These are the hallmark tactics of entities that function like a Cabal.

As a nation, we must continue to foster strong institutions, encourage a vigilant and empowered Fourth Estate, and support an informed citizenry. Open dialogue, like the one we’ve witnessed recently, is essential. It strengthens our democracy, keeps power in check, and ensures that no hidden force can subvert the will of the people.

The fact that EmaSwati have boldly engaged on this issue is a positive sign of political maturity and civic responsibility. It reflects a shared national commitment to integrity, transparency, and progress. Let us continue to safeguard our democracy—not just from identified threats, but also from those that lurk beneath the surface.
