MBABANE – Eswatini’s farmers are set to benefit from a new import restriction on tomatoes and beetroots, with NAMBoard confirming that the country now has enough local supply to meet market demand. The restriction will take effect from 11th August 2025, allowing Swazi grown produce to take centre stage in stores and markets nationwide.
NAMBoard’s latest assessment revealed that both crops are currently being produced in high volumes locally, prompting the temporary suspension of imports. The move is designed to protect local producers from an oversaturated market and to encourage continued investment in the agricultural sector.
The restriction marks a significant achievement for farmers, many of whom have worked hard to scale up production. By meeting national demand, they are helping reduce dependence on imported vegetables an important step toward food self sufficiency. NAMBoard has committed to monitoring the situation closely, promising to lift the restriction should supply levels fall below the set thresholds to ensure that no market gaps develop.
Local farmers welcomed NAMBoard’s decision, describing it as a strong step towards supporting their efforts to feed the nation and reducing reliance on external competition. They said the move shows confidence in the ability of Eswatini’s farmers to meet the country’s needs.
Traders and suppliers seeking clarity on the restriction can reach out to Musa Simelane, Trade Analyst, at 7617 6648 or Ms Cynthia Simelane, Sales and Market Manager, at 7802 2908. This development is being welcomed as a win for the local economy and a vote of confidence in the capacity of Eswatini’s agricultural sector to feed the nation.
