MBABANE – The countdown is on as Athletics Eswatini (AE) prepares to host the final qualifier for the under-18 athletes vying to represent Eswatini at the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region-5 Games.

The decisive event will take place on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Mavuso Sports Centre.

This event marks the last opportunity for young athletes to secure a spot in the team heading to Namibia for the mid-year AUSC Region-5 Games. The excitement and stakes are high as the best of Eswatini’s talent takes to the track and field. “The journey continues with the second qualifier for the Track & Field U18 AUSC Region-5. This is the final opportunity for those aspiring to represent Eswatini in Namibia. Give it your all, and let’s come out in numbers to support our athletes,” AE encouraged in a statement.

Building Excellence in Officiating

Ahead of this crucial qualifier, AE held a National Technical Officials Symposium at the Mavuso Sports Centre last Saturday, attended by 15 officials. The symposium aimed to elevate officiating standards in athletics and ensure a seamless execution of the upcoming event.

Facilitated by Macite Thusi, the day began with theory sessions covering officiating philosophy, conduct rules, and best practices for track and field events. The program then transitioned into practical sessions, where participants applied their theoretical knowledge on the ground. To cap off the day, an evaluation session tested the officials on their newfound skills and readiness to oversee competitive events.

“The symposium concluded with an evaluation session, where officials undertook a set exam to assess their understanding of the topics covered. This final step ensured that participants not only gained knowledge but could also demonstrate their readiness to apply it effectively in future athletics events,” AE stated.

High Hopes for the Future

With officials now equipped to maintain high standards, attention turns to the athletes. The qualifiers are expected to showcase exceptional performances as young stars put everything on the line for a chance to represent the nation. This final selection will shape the team’s strength heading into Namibia, and AE is calling on the nation to rally behind the athletes.

The stage is set for an action-packed Friday at Mavuso Sports Centre, where dreams will be made, and future stars may emerge. Athletics fans and supporters are encouraged to attend and cheer for Eswatini’s best as they aim for glory in the AUSC Region-5 Games.
