NHLANGANO — Xolile Hlophe’s story is one of resilience!
Hlophe is a determined and inspiring woman from Nhlangano, located in the Shiselweni region of Eswatini. At 34 years old, she has faced numerous challenges but has always found a way to push through.
Currently residing in Manzini for work and business, she reflects on her journey and the creation of her business, ULamgangela Creations, where she handcrafts a variety of products, focusing on house interior decor.
2018, she officially launched ULamgangela Creations. The name is a tribute to her great-grandmother from her father’s side. “ULamgangela represents my roots and family heritage,” she explains. What began as a hobby has now blossomed into a successful business.
She creates a range of products, focusing on house interior decor. Her offerings include baskets, cushions, mats, morning shoes, slim bags, and storage bags for kids featuring popular cartoon characters. She also paints grass bags and makes scented herbs. “I love crocheting, beading, and painting,” she shares, emphasizing her passion for creativity.
Hlophe completed her certification in Psychosocial studies at the University of Eswatini as a self-sponsored student. “My business made it possible for me to pay my university tuition fees,” she shares. Balancing her studies, work, and parenting was tough, especially after experiencing teenage pregnancy. Despite these hurdles, she received invaluable support from her family.
After completing her tertiary education, Hlophe found it challenging to secure a well-paying job. “I got piece jobs, but the salary was not enough,” she explains. It was during this period that she decided to turn her hobby into a business. “I used my hobby to create a source of income,” she says, a decision that ultimately changed her life.
The motivation to start ULamgangela Creations stemmed from the positive feedback she received on social media. “People love the products,” she says with pride. Creating these items also serves as a form of therapy for her. “It helps me relax when I’m stressed or angry,” she explains. This creative outlet has not only boosted her self-esteem but also allowed her to connect with her community.
One of the highlights of her business journey has been participating in the Makoti Festival. “I love the Makoti Festival, and this will be my fourth time marketing there,” she says enthusiastically. In 2022, she had the opportunity to gift a product to the late South African artist Zahara, which was a memorable experience for her. During the festival, she meets many customers, which helps her grow her business. “I get to connect with people and showcase my creations,” she shares. The exposure at such events has been invaluable for her brand.
She is passionate about supporting other women in business, especially those who are struggling. “Use social media for marketing,” she advises. She encourages them to improve their skills by learning from resources like YouTube. Attending business seminars, workshops, and trade fairs can also provide valuable insights and connections. Her message is clear: “Don’t be discouraged if people don’t buy immediately. Keep visiting markets and selling your products. Perseverance is key; don’t give up,” she emphasizes.
Looking ahead, she has ambitious plans for ULamgangela Creations. She envisions opening a shop and establishing mini outlets in towns across Eswatini. An online store for exporting her creations is also in the works, as her products are increasingly loved by tourists and customers from abroad.
In addition to expanding her business, she is committed to sharing her knowledge. “I teach others and share my skills,” she says. She believes in the importance of uniqueness in product offerings, encouraging others to differentiate themselves in the market.
