MATSAPHA – From the lecture halls of Kwaluseni to the global stage in Zanzibar, Vuyelwa Karabo Simelane, a fourth-year student at the University of Eswatini, is set to fly the kingdom’s flag high.
She will represent Eswatini at the 31st African Organisation for Standardization (ARSO) General Assembly from June 25th to 28th, 2025.
Her journey began with the 12th ARSO Continental Essay Competition, launched in January and open to all tertiary institutions in the country. Themed “The Role of Education about Standardization (EaS) in Shaping Education and African Students for the Sustainable Development Opportunity and Challenges in the 21st Century”, the contest attracted 25 entries from across Eswatini’s colleges and universities.
Vuyelwa emerged as a standout voice, impressing judges with her perspective on how education and standardization can transform Africa’s future.

The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo, hailed her achievement as a proud moment for the nation. He highlighted the initiative as one of the fruits of collaboration between ESWASA (Eswatini Standards Authority) and ARSO, in nurturing youth excellence through awareness and education in standardization.
“Vuyelwa has put the country on the map,” the Minister said. “She is a shining example of the great potential our youth hold. I encourage her to make connections, gain insights, and return to inspire others with the value of quality standards in our daily lives.”
To support her journey, Khumalo pledged E10 000 as a token of encouragement.
Vuyelwa, beaming with gratitude, thanked ESWASA for promoting the essay competition and expressed heartfelt appreciation for the Minister’s generous support. “This opportunity means the world to me,” she shared. “I’m excited to represent Eswatini and grow through this experience.”
Her story is not only one of personal triumph, but also a celebration of how empowering platforms can unlock the promise of a brighter future—one inspired student at a time.
