MANZINI – The Ministry of Education and Training has determined that 500 teachers are currently needed to address staffing shortages in public schools across Eswatini.

This announcement was made by Minister Owen Nxumalo during his visit to Salesian High School in Manzini on January 28, 2025.

The minister clarified that this figure was reached after the government conducted its own investigation, prompted by a claim from the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) that 4 000 teachers were needed nationwide.

Nxumalo stated that SNAT was unable to provide concrete evidence to support their claim and that the ministry’s independent findings confirmed a significantly smaller deficit of 500 teachers.

“We now know the exact number of teachers required,” Nxumalo affirmed. He also noted progress in converting temporary teachers into permanent staff, a process he believes has brought stability to many schools. He expressed optimism that most of the required educators are already contributing effectively to the education system.

On the issue of Free Primary Education (FPE) funding, Nxumalo confirmed that resources are available to support schools, but delays arise due to incomplete or inaccurate data submissions by schools.

“Some schools do not provide the necessary information on time, and others submit incorrect details, which complicates decision-making,” he explained. Despite these challenges, the minister reported that over 200 schools have submitted the required information and will soon receive the allocated funds.

Additionally, Nxumalo assured the public that food shortages in schools will soon be addressed. He projected that within three weeks, primary schools would begin receiving food supplies, with high schools following shortly thereafter. This effort aims to ensure that all students benefit from adequate nutrition as they continue their education.

The Ministry of Education and Training’s initiatives reflect a commitment to resolving pressing issues in the country’s education sector. From staffing shortages to resource allocation, Nxumalo emphasized the importance of accurate data and collaborative efforts in achieving lasting solutions.

The minister’s visit to Salesian High School highlights the government’s proactive approach in engaging with educational institutions and addressing challenges affecting the quality of education in Eswatini.
