…. Big reforms underway to boost national communication
By Mbono Mdluli
MBABANE – A new era of open and dynamic communication is on the horizon for the Kingdom of Eswatini.
Government has launched an exciting recruitment process to appoint a new Government Spokesperson, a move widely seen as the beginning of a bold transformation of the Office of the Press Secretary under the Prime Minister’s Office.
The Civil Service Commission (CSC) is already screening an impressive pool of candidates with diverse backgrounds in media, public relations, law, diplomacy, politics, security, and the arts. The goal is clear: to find a charismatic communicator who can effectively bridge the gap between government and the people, both at home and internationally.
This development comes at a crucial time. On July 21, 2025, Hhukwini MP Alec Lushaba made an impassioned plea in Parliament, calling for an immediate revamp of the under-resourced spokesperson’s office. He cited the urgent need for proper staffing and tools to restore the office’s effectiveness. His message echoed loudly among the nation’s media houses, who shared similar sentiments during a press briefing at the Cabinet Offices in Mbabane.
Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini confirmed that the recruitment is in progress and emphasized government’s commitment to ensuring the Press Secretary’s office is fully equipped to serve the nation with professionalism and efficiency.
A Brief History of the Role
The position of Government Spokesperson, also known as the Press Secretary, was created to centralize and professionalize government communication, particularly during periods of national and international attention.
The first official to hold the position was Meshack Shongwe, who stepped into the role around 90s.
Over the years, other communicators stepped into the role, including Macanjana Motsa, Sabelo Dlamini, and most recently Alpheous Nxumalo. When Nxumalo exited early this year, Thabile Mdluli, who had been serving as Assistant Spokesperson, assumed the role in an acting capacity.
What Makes the Role So Important?
The Government Spokesperson is more than just a messenger. They are the voice of the executive, entrusted with:
• Announcing cabinet decisions and national policy updates
• Managing press relations and hosting briefings
• Responding to media inquiries — both local and international
• Combating misinformation
• Crafting and issuing official government statements
In times of crisis, whether political, health-related, or environmental, the Spokesperson plays a pivotal role in shaping the national response and maintaining public confidence.
Calls for a Modern and Empowered Office
Parliamentarians, media professionals, and analysts agree: it’s not just about hiring a new spokesperson, it’s about building a fully-fledged communications hub. Calls have been made to support the office with trained communications officers, digital media specialists, and modern public relations strategies.
A well-equipped and proactive press office is seen as vital for reinforcing public trust, enhancing transparency, and ensuring the government’s message is clear and consistent across all platforms.
A Promising Path Forward
As Eswatini tackles important national issues such as economic growth, youth empowerment, and democratic dialogue, a credible and empowered Government Spokesperson will be instrumental in telling the country’s story, not only to emaSwati but to the world.
This recruitment marks a fresh chapter in how government communicates. With the right voice, tools, and team, Eswatini is poised to strengthen its public engagement and take its communication to bold new heights.
