MBABANE – Kusekhaya Cycling Club and Galp Eswatini hosted a successful safety awareness ride from Ezulwini to Matsapha on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
The event which was meant to raise awareness on the importance of sharing the road by all its users was attended by over 50 cyclists from the different clubs. Worth noting is that cyclists who are not affiliated to clubs also came through to support as they are also using the roads for cycling.
The event had all the stakeholders that are involved when cyclists are on the road, which includes: Road Safety Council, Royal Eswatini Police Service, Emergency Medical Services, Eswatini Cycling Association, as well as local media houses. Speakers on the day mentioned the importance of all road users to be mindful of each other, and play their individual part in being visible to make sure that accidents are reduced.
Speaking on behalf of Galp Eswatini, The Managing Director, Bruno L. Marques highlighted that safety was a priority for the organisations as they use the road to deliver their products. He went on to mention that their tolerance level for loss of life is Zero, and that is why they are part of the road safety awareness initiative.
Mduduzi Kaudi of Kusekhaya Cycling reiterated the speakers’ comments and further highlighted that cyclists have to take it upon themselves that they make sure risk is minimized by taking the required precaution such as having lights, and using high visibility colours or have reflectors when riding on the roads.
“Cycling is a highly beneficial sport that promotes physical fitness, mental well-being, and environmental sustainability. It improves cardiovascular health, builds muscle strength, and helps manage weight, while also reducing stress and boosting overall mood,” he said.
Additionally, Kaudi said cycling is an eco-friendly mode of transportation that reduces carbon emissions and traffic congestion. To encourage more people to take up cycling, it is essential to ensure road safety and foster a culture of courtesy and respect among all road users. By doing so, we can create a healthier, greener, and more inclusive community for everyone.
