MBABANE – Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini yesterday represented His Majesty King Mswati III and the Kingdom of Eswatini at a virtual Extraordinary Summit of the SADC Heads of State and Government, convened to address the worsening security and humanitarian crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The summit, which brought together regional leaders, assessed the volatile situation in the DRC and deliberated on the future of the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC).

Eswatini supports phased withdrawal of SAMIDRC troops
Eswatini joined other SADC member states in endorsing a coordinated and phased withdrawal of SAMIDRC troops from the DRC. This carefully planned approach aims to ensure the safety of deployed troops while preventing a security vacuum that could embolden armed groups operating in the region.
Dlamini highlighted that while military intervention has played a role in stabilizing parts of the eastern DRC, a long-term solution requires diplomatic engagement and a political framework involving all stakeholders – state and non-state actors, military and non-military groups.
Humanitarian crisis in focus

The premier expressed deep concern over the dire humanitarian situation in the DRC, where thousands of civilians have been displaced by the ongoing conflict. He emphasized the need for unimpeded humanitarian aid access, urging all parties to uphold international humanitarian principles, cease attacks on civilian infrastructure, and protect the free movement of affected communities.
On behalf of His Majesty King Mswati III and the Nation, PM conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the conflict, including the brave SAMIDRC personnel who have demonstrated resilience in the face of immense challenges.
Summit resolutions: A path to peace
The SADC Extraordinary Summit concluded with the decision to:
- End the SAMIDRC mandate and initiate a phased withdrawal of its troops.
- Reaffirm commitment to a political and diplomatic resolution of the DRC crisis.
- Engage all stakeholders in efforts to restore peace and stability.
- Strengthen civilian protection measures and ensure humanitarian aid access.
Eswatini remains a dedicated partner in regional peace initiatives and continues to support diplomatic solutions that promote long-term stability in Africa.
