MALKERNS – The United Nations in Eswatini has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by partnering with one of the country’s most iconic platforms—the MTN Bushfire Festival.

Speaking at the launch of the 18th edition of the internationally acclaimed festival on April 4, 2025, UN Eswatini Resident Coordinator George Wachira expressed excitement about the dynamic partnership. The event, held at House on Fire in Malkerns, was officially opened by Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini.

Wachira highlighted the urgency of driving progress toward the 17 SDGs, noting that only 17% of targets are currently on track globally. However, he remained optimistic that collaborations like the one with Bushfire can ignite the momentum needed to close the gap—especially in Eswatini.

“We are proud to once again join hands with MTN Bushfire for the third year running. This festival is a shining example of how creativity, innovation, and cultural celebration can also drive real change,” Wachira said. He thanked festival founder Mr. Jiggs Thorne, the House on Fire team, and the MTN Bushfire Advisory Board for championing development through art.

The partnership, he noted, offers a powerful opportunity to raise awareness and galvanize action across sectors—from youth empowerment to climate resilience. “Bushfire is’more than just a music and arts festival. It’s a movement that reaches hearts and minds here in Eswatini and far beyond our borders,” he added.

Wachira also praised His Majesty King Mswati III’s powerful call of “Nkwe!”—a rallying cry for swift and determined development action—saying it aligns perfectly with the global push to fast-track SDG progress.

He outlined six key investment areas that are essential for transformation: education, decent job creation, energy access, digital technology, sustainable food systems, and climate action.

This year, eight UN agencies—including FAO, IOM, UNESCO, UNFPA, WHO, UNAIDS, WEP, and UNHCR—will take part in Bushfire activities. These include hosting four major dialogues on vital topics: food security, climate and pollution, health and gender equality, and the sustainability of cultural festivals.

Central to the UN’s presence will be the popular “Bring Your Fire Zone,” featuring engaging artistic showcases, thought-provoking discussions, and hands-on exhibitions that shine a light on the SDGs. The UN also plans to support volunteer-led community advocacy and post-festival initiatives that extend the impact well beyond the weekend celebration.

In his closing remarks, Wachira underscored the importance of unity and multilateral cooperation. “To truly achieve the SDGs, we must come together—governments, communities, artists, and international partners. The UN remains committed to this collective journey toward a more inclusive, prosperous, and sustainable world,” he said.
