NKHABA – Thembela Mdluli, an aspiring sketch artist from Nkhaba, firmly believes that “art is what we live by.” This philosophy is not just a catchy phrase for him; it’s a fundamental truth that guides his life and creative work. According to Mdluli, art is not merely a form of expression; it’s a way to understand and navigate the world. “Art is deeper like any other literature book,” he states. It connects us to our emotions, tells our stories, and reflects our experiences in profound ways.

Born and raised in a community steeped in artistic tradition, Mdluli was surrounded by creativity from a young age. Witnessing his father craft beautiful pieces from soapstone and wood sparked his curiosity and love for art. His journey took a more formal turn when he attended Nkhaba High School, where he was encouraged to explore his artistic talents.

Eager to deepen his understanding, he enrolled at the National Handcraft Training Center, where he studied fine arts and ceramics. This experience opened his eyes to different mediums and techniques, allowing him to express his artistic vision in diverse ways. Mdluli finds joy in creating art that speaks to life’s complexities, believing that every piece he creates embodies a story waiting to be told.

Through his artwork, Mdluli aims to convey genuine feelings and life stories. “I do my work with my heart; I want my artwork to make a connection to those who come across it,” he narrates. He believes that art should evoke emotion and create a strong connection between the artist and the viewer. For him, art is like a mirror reflecting the complexities of life; it can evoke joy, sorrow, and everything in between. He wants his audience to not only see his work but to feel it, to experience the emotions and stories woven into each piece.

Mdluli seeks to challenge the notion that art is just for aesthetics. He wants people to understand that it can be a profound form of communication, much like literature or music. By tapping into universal emotions, he hopes to foster empathy and connection among his audience.

Despite his passion, Mdluli faces significant challenges in his artistic career. Many people see art as a mere hobby rather than a valuable profession. “The key in life is never to give up nor stop,” he asserts. Mdluli passionately believes that art is essential; it adds color and imagination to our lives, connecting us in ways that words sometimes cannot.

Looking ahead, Mdluli has ambitious goals for his artistic journey. He envisions creating a line of clothing featuring his artistic designs, allowing people to wear pieces that reflect his philosophy of life and creativity. He dreams of opening several stores nationwide, making his art accessible to a broader audience. Ultimately, he wants his work to inspire others and demonstrate that art can be a powerful force for change and connection in the world.
