PIGG’S PEAK— Country music may not be the first genre people associate with Eswatini’s music scene, but Sibusiso Mncobi Dlamini*, known by his stage name Sbuetjas, is changing that narrative in a powerful way.
On Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 3:00 PM, the global online platform NTS Radio aired a special episode titled “The Country Music Kingdom of Eswatini” as part of its “Reimagining Country” series hosted by Jamal Khadar. The program featured Sbuetjas’ music and a recorded phone interview with the host, introducing his sound to an international audience.
Although Sbuetjas did not perform live, his original songs Mvelinchanti and Go Friends, along with his personal story, took center stage during a curated 30-minute segment dedicated to expanding the definition of country music. The special episode also highlighted two other Swazi artists, Dusty and Stones and Zwelly Masuku, showcasing the emerging country music talent from Eswatini.

Reflecting on the experience, Sbuetjas expressed his emotions: “Ecstatic would downplay the happiness I felt when I heard I’d be interviewed by an international media house. I was filled with so much joy and happiness, I had to wipe a tear that escaped my eyes.”
NTS Radio, founded in London and now streaming globally from studios in the UK and Los Angeles, is renowned for spotlighting unique, genre-defying talent. Featuring a Swazi country artist was a bold and inspiring move, reflecting the platform’s commitment to musical diversity and the growing recognition of voices like Sbuetjas.
Sbuetjas expressed hope that this exposure would open new doors in his career: “Though it still feels surreal, I hope this opens doors toward achieving my goals. This is the start of great things. It can open doors for countless possibilities, and I am just up for this ride.”
Buoyed by the international spotlight, Sbuetjas shared how the experience has ignited a renewed passion for his craft: “This pushes me to put in more effort in learning more skills, writing more songs, and recording more music.”
Listeners across the world should tune in via www.NTS.live to experience how Swazi artists are helping to reimagine country music. Sbuetjas is paving the way for a new era of country music that reflects the rich cultural tapestry of Eswatini.
