MBABANE — Four outstanding emaSwati creatives have secured project support under the Freedom250 initiative, a cultural empowerment programme led by the U.S. Embassy Eswatini in partnership with the Eswatini Theatre Club.
Each recipient will receive E7 400 to develop and stage an original creative project at the Theatre Club, and to lead a youth-focused engagement session at the American Corner Mbabane.
Freedom 250 — also known as America 250 — is a public diplomacy initiative commemorating the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States. Implemented locally through the Theatre Club and American Corners, the programme celebrates American artistic excellence while strengthening Eswatini’s growing creative economy.
The initiative was officially launched on January 5, 2026, when the Embassy invited local artists to submit proposals for performances, workshops, and events inspired by American arts, culture, and shared bilateral ties.
Beyond financial support, selected creatives benefit from access to rehearsal and performance space, as well as basic sound and lighting technical assistance. In return, beneficiaries stage a public presentation at the Theatre Club and facilitate a related youth activity at an American Corner in Mbabane, Manzini, or Nhlangano.
During the launch of the programme U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Officer Carly Van Orman said the programme was intentionally designed to grow arts entrepreneurship in Eswatini. “We hope this initiative will expand the pool of individuals who think of themselves as arts managers, who bridge the gap between talent and business,” she said.
“Eswatini has no shortage of artists, but many do not yet see themselves as entrepreneurs or possess the project management, marketing, or accounting skills needed to create opportunities for themselves and others.”
She noted that selecting only four projects allowed for focused support, stronger marketing, and a higher chance of impactful, well-organised events. “The creative economy is growing. Supporting art, entrepreneurs, and institutions like Eswatini Theatre Club is key.”
The selected creatives reflect a rich mix of theatre, dance, music, storytelling, and education.
Kate Jones-Mamba is an educator and creative producer working across Eswatini, South Africa, and the UK, committed to making theatre accessible to wider audiences.
Welcome Mavoka, founder of Beyond Limits, is an internationally experienced choreographer who promotes “education through entertainment” and pathways for young dancers.
Siyethemba “Siye” Dlamini, founder of Coyi Theatre, is a multidisciplinary storyteller whose work explores lived experiences and social issues, including gender-based violence.
Mzwandile “Lution” Nxumalo is a musician, sound engineer, IVLP alumnus, and youth leader known for genre-blending music and creative mentorship.
Through their projects, the four creatives will combine performance with dialogue, using art to spark confidence, reflection, and expression among young emaSwati.
Freedom250 stands as a practical example of how arts and culture can deepen learning, strengthen communities, and build meaningful cultural bridges between Eswatini and the United States.
