HLATIKHULU – From Hlathikhulu to the nation!
From the quiet hills of Hlathikhulu comes a powerful new voice in Eswatini’s music scene. Mciniseli Dlamini, better known as Suffocate De Rapper, has released his latest single titled “Emakhaya,” a heartfelt collaboration with fellow artist Siantor Siwela. “Emakhaya” is now streaming on all major digital platforms.
Blending Hip Hop and Afro-pop, the track is already creating a buzz across digital platforms, with an official music video currently in the works. The name “Suffocate” is a creative evolution of his nickname “Cate,” chosen to reflect his drive to rise above the competition and bring attention to a town rarely associated with mainstream entertainment. “Suffocate De Rapper” isn’t just a stage name—it’s a mission. At just 21, he’s determined to break boundaries and put Hlathikhulu on the musical map.
His journey began early, in Grade 6 at Hlathikhulu Central Primary School, where his love for music first took shape. In high school at Hlathikhulu Central High, that passion deepened. He began recording songs and performing locally, gaining confidence and building a name for himself. A key turning point was his debut at an event hosted by Dr Manga, which opened the door to greater exposure.
Collaborating with close friends Lindani Lukhele and Sibinginkosi Xaba—who performs under the name MFG Da X-JAY—Suffocate honed his lyrical craft through cyphers and local performances. Together, they worked with artists like Elliecce De Baby, increasing their visibility and streaming numbers. This momentum culminated in a 2024 National Arts & Culture Awards (NACA) nomination for Outstanding Hip Hop Artist—a milestone for both Suffocate and his hometown.
His new single, “Emakhaya,” stands out for its emotional depth and relatability. It’s a message to parents and families, expressing the inner conflict faced by young people who must leave home in search of opportunity. The song’s lyrics explore longing, growth, and the hope of returning home one day, making it especially resonant for Eswatini’s youth.
The inspiration for “Emakhaya” emerged before Suffocate relocated to Matsapha, where he now lives with collaborator Siantor Siwela. Their shared experiences informed the song’s emotional core, resulting in a track that’s both personal and universally understood.
The single was entirely produced at Dark Child Studio, with production, beat-making, and mastering by the multi-talented Putso Mndzebele, also known as Putso De Vocalist. Suffocate describes the process as organic, relying on freestyle sessions and deep reflection. The final result is a track that delivers both sonically and emotionally.
Beyond the single, Suffocate also appears on Siantor Siwela’s new album “Sinini.” For Suffocate, music is more than a career—it’s therapy. “As I rap or sing, I feel relieved from a burden,” he says. That catharsis is evident in his live performances, which have included high-profile shows at Mpaka Recreational with Limpopo Boys and Rockcie (both from SA), and at Hlatikhulu Sport Center alongside MusiholiQ (SA).
Looking to the future, Suffocate hopes to collaborate with fellow artist Young Zesh, whose music he admires for its authenticity and emotional impact. It’s a vision he shares: to create songs that people can relate to—songs that heal, inspire, and connect.
With raw talent, lyrical honesty, and an unshakable work ethic, Suffocate De Rapper is proving that greatness can rise from anywhere—even the heart of Hlathikhulu.
