MBABANE – A 10-year-old girl from Siphofaneni has been given a new chance at life after undergoing surgery to correct a severe leg condition, thanks to the combined efforts of Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Thulisile Dladla, the Taiwanese Embassy, and local doctors.
The young girl, Amahle Simelane, had lived with Blount disease, a condition that causes the legs to bend outward, since the age of two. Her struggle was noticed by a social worker, who reported the case to the DPM’s office.
Speaking during a visit to Mbabane Government Hospital today, DPM Dladla explained that she immediately sought help from Taiwanese Ambassador Jeremy Liang after seeing pictures of Amahle’s condition. “We have worked together on a similar case before, and I am grateful for Taiwan’s continued support,” she said.
The Embassy facilitated Amahle’s referral to Taiwanese surgeon Dr Shin, who worked alongside local orthopedic specialist Dr Melusi Simelane to carry out the delicate operation. The DPM thanked the doctors for their dedication and further pledged to donate a blanket to keep Amahle warm during her stay.
Ambassador Liang praised DPM Dladla for her compassion and commended the medical team for their commitment. He also announced his donation of a wheelchair to assist Amahle as she recovers.
Dr Simelane explained that surgery was the best option to correct Amahle’s condition. “The ideal age for this kind of operation is from one year old, but it can still be done later. For Amahle, the procedure required cutting the bones and inserting rods to straighten them, which will take longer to heal,” he said. He added that Amahle is expected to begin walking with crutches in about eight weeks and should fully recover in five months.
Overcome with emotion, Amahle’s mother, Jabulile Ndzimandze, expressed her gratitude. “My child has lived with this condition since she was two years old, and it worsened as she grew. I am so happy that she will now be able to run, play, and live like other children,” she said tearfully.
The hospital visit by the DPM and the Taiwanese Ambassador not only brought comfort to Amahle and her family but also highlighted the power of international partnerships in transforming lives.
Amahle is recovering at Mbabane Government Hospital and will soon return home to continue her healing journey.
