MBABANE – The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) is urging emaSwati to take proactive steps ahead of the approaching summer rains by strengthening their houses and taking simple safety measures.
NDMA Chief Executive Officer, Victor Mahlalela, highlighted that many households affected by disasters are often caught unprepared, making them more vulnerable to damage and loss. He encouraged every family to actively work on reducing risks.
“We encourage households to fix and strengthen their homes so they can withstand the pressure of the summer season,” Mahlalela said. “The resources we receive from government and development partners to respond to disasters are limited. EmaSwati should not wait for NDMA or government assistance. We must invest in preparedness and prevention before disasters strike.”
He explained that while the NDMA continues to respond to disaster incidents across the country, its capacity is limited, making household-level preparedness essential.
To support communities, the NDMA provides regular weather updates and early warnings to help residents prepare in advance. The agency also commended emaSwati for following safety measures, especially during windy conditions when bans and precautions are issued.
“Our nation needs to build resilience at the household level,” he added. “Preparedness is not just the responsibility of government or NDMA. It is a shared responsibility.”
By taking early precautions, families can significantly reduce damage to their homes and protect lives, reinforcing the importance of preparedness and community resilience ahead of the summer rains.
