MANZINI– Imisebe Publishing celebrated International Literacy Day 2025 at Inkhanyeti School, highlighting the role of literacy in navigating the digital era.
Tony Mabaso, representing Imisebe Publishing, said the event was a “momentous occasion” to advance reading and learning in schools across Eswatini.
“We are honoured to champion literacy and empower young minds to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world,” Mabaso said.
The celebration featured a wide range of student-led activities, including multilingual poetry, debates, storytelling, and interactive performances, all designed to highlight the importance of literacy in shaping personal growth and national development.
Students showcased creativity, critical thinking, and confidence, demonstrating how literacy equips them for a rapidly changing world.
Mabaso emphasised that the theme, “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era,” reflects the opportunities and challenges presented by digital technologies. He explained that while digital tools can empower learners and broaden access to knowledge, foundational literacy remains essential for meaningful engagement.
“Digital literacy depends on strong reading and comprehension skills. Without it, technology cannot reach its full potential,” he said.
The ENPF representative also stressed the inclusivity aspect of literacy, noting that digital tools can empower traditionally marginalised communities.
“We want every child in Eswatini, regardless of background, to have the opportunity to read, learn, and fully participate in the digital economy,” Mabaso said.
To encourage participation and reward effort, the event included a prize-giving segment, with string bags, T-shirts, Imisebe bookmarks, and books handed out to students who excelled in activities.
Mabaso noted that these small rewards serve as inspiration to develop a lifelong love of reading.
Teachers and staff praised the initiative as an innovative and necessary step in promoting literacy.
Mabaso concluded with a thoughtful reminder to students: “The digital world is exciting, but it is literacy that will help you understand it, shape it, and make it your own. Read widely, think critically, and create boldly.”
Imisebe Publishing reaffirmed its commitment to supporting literacy initiatives across the country, promising continued collaboration with schools to ensure that Eswatini’s children are equipped with the skills to thrive in both traditional and digital learning environments.
