MANZINI – The University of Eswatini has taken a bold step in the fight against gender-based violence by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the global One Billion Rising (OBR) campaign.
Speaking during the media briefing at Kwaluseni Campus on Tuesday, OBR Africa Regional Coordinator, Colani Hlatjwako, described the partnership as “a powerful and transformative statement that violence has no place in our institutions, our homes, our workplaces, or our communities.”
Hlatjwako said the MOU was more than a formality, but a declaration of justice and dignity.
“By joining hands with One Billion Rising, UNESWA has shown leadership in recognising this fight as one for equality and safety. It acknowledges that everyone, students, staff, leadership, and alumni, has a role to play in ending violence,” she said.
She noted with concern that gender-based violence in Eswatini continues to rise, citing cases of femicide, sexual assault, emotional abuse, and a worrying increase in suicides among young people.
“This is not just a women’s issue; it is a national crisis that affects us all,” she emphasised.
Hlatjwako highlighted that the OBR campaign uses art, dance, poetry, and grassroots mobilisation to inspire young people to become active change agents.
She called on all sectors, government, corporate, civil society, and tertiary institutions, to support the movement financially, create safe spaces, and implement zero-tolerance policies against violence.
She further announced that the 2026 One Billion Rising Festival will be hosted at the University of Eswatini, under the directorship of Thamsanqa “KRTC” Sibandze.
“This festival will add UNESWA’s voice to more than 30 institutions and organisations that have stood with us over the years,” she said.
Hlatjwako concluded by urging the nation to unite behind the campaign.
“When we rise together, we are unstoppable. Let us rise in unity, in solidarity, and in action,” she said.
