MBABANE – At just 18 years old, Simphiwe Mthimkhulu, known on stage as Mahle Sonkondlo, is already making her mark as one of Eswatini’s most promising young poets.
Mahle’s story is one of courage, creativity, and resilience. Now a first-year Bachelor of Science in Information Technology student at the University of Eswatini (Kwaluseni Campus), she balances academics with her deep passion for poetry, a passion born from pain, growth, and healing.
“I started doing poetry when I was in Form 3 in 2022,” she recalls. “At that time, I was going through depression, and writing became my voice when I couldn’t speak.” What began as self-expression through pen and paper soon transformed into a mission to help others heal through words.
As her confidence grew, so did her artistry. In July 2023, she finally stepped onto the stage for the first time, a defining moment that marked the birth of Mahle Sonkondlo. The name was inspired by her clan name Mashiyamahle, a suggestion guided by renowned poet Mangwane Sonkondlo, who played a vital role in mentoring and building her confidence.
Since then, Mahle has recorded several poems with Swazi Melody, including a heartfelt piece titled “One Day”, which reflects her belief in perseverance and hope. Her creative journey has also led her to join the UNESWA Poetry Society (UPS), where she continues to refine her talent and connect with fellow artists.
On November 7, Mahle and her UPS peers will host a Poetry Night under the theme “Bambelela”, a message encouraging people never to lose hope no matter what life brings.
“I believe I’m still a rising star in poetry,” she says confidently. “I dream of working with poets like Christian Maz, Azzy L, and Zamo Cofi. This is just the beginning of my journey, there’s so much more to come.”
With her powerful words and unwavering determination, Mahle Sonkondlo is not just a poet, she’s a voice of strength, hope, and inspiration for Eswatini’s youth.
