TIMPHISINI – isLearners have been urged to turn their skills and talents into sources of income as they prepare for life after school, with Deputy Principal Nokuthula Dlamini-Matsebula from Timphisini Central warning that not all of them will secure white-collar jobs.
Dlamini-Matsebula encouraged learners to look beyond traditional career paths and recognise that the skills they acquire at school can also become tools for earning a living, creating businesses and contributing to their communities.
She said learners should begin identifying their strengths while they are still at school and work towards developing them into practical skills that can be used after completing their education.
The Deputy Principal stressed the importance of self-reliance, particularly for young people who may find it difficult to immediately enter the formal employment sector. She encouraged learners not to underestimate skills that may appear ordinary, as these can potentially be developed into income-generating activities.
According to Dlamini-Matsebula, education should equip learners with knowledge while also encouraging them to think creatively about how they can use what they have learnt to create opportunities for themselves.
She further encouraged learners to consider entrepreneurship and skills-based work as possible alternatives to depending solely on securing office-based employment.
Her message also highlights the importance of learners developing a range of abilities that can increase their opportunities after school. Practical skills, creativity, problem-solving and the ability to identify opportunities can complement academic qualifications and help young people navigate life beyond the classroom.
Dlamini-Matsebula urged learners to take their talents seriously and start developing them early, saying their future should not depend entirely on whether they secure a white-collar job.
The call serves as a reminder to learners that success can take different forms and that skills, when properly developed and applied, can become a foundation for self-reliance and economic participation.
