A Growing Regional and Cultural Powerhouse
Since its inception in April 2022, the Makoti Festival has transcended its local roots to become one of Southern Africa’s most influential cultural events. Its expanding influence was clearly demonstrated earlier this year with successful media launches conducted in regional hubs including Mbombela (South Africa), Lesotho, and Maputo (Mozambique), establishing it as a truly regional attraction.
The festival’s core mission remains a family-oriented cultural celebration rooted firmly in Eswatini traditions. The event specifically honours women, from married makotis to young girls preparing for their future roles as makotis (brides), by providing a vibrant, respectful, and educational environment.
The 2026 event promises a rich cultural tapestry featuring:
- Cultural Showcases
- Trendy Fashion Exhibitions
- Food and Craft Stalls
- Regional Music and Live Performances
- A Vibrant Display of Eswatini Heritage
Mthethwa promised that the 2026 edition would be “bigger and more vibrant” than ever before. “Next year’s build-up officially kicks off, and people must watch this space for more updates,” said Mthethwa.
Success of the 2025 Edition
The momentum for the fifth edition is carried forward by the resounding success of the fourth edition, held on 26 April 2025. That event featured a stellar line-up that brought together artists and DJs from across five nations: Eswatini, South Africa, Mozambique, Lesotho, and Botswana.
The 2025 line-up included gospel legend Dr. Rebecca Malope and maskandi heavyweight Khuzani “uGatsheni” Ndlovu from South Africa, Mozambican star Lizha James, and Lesotho’s Ntate Stunna, alongside celebrated Eswatini acts like Shongwe Ne Khuphuka and Young Zesh. The event was expertly managed by main MCs Mzwakhe “Tjovitjo” Khumalo and Siphesihle Nkwanyana, with guest MCs joining from regional radio stations.
With anticipation already at a fever pitch, the fifth edition of the Makoti Festival is already positioning itself as the most culturally enriched event to date, promising an unforgettable experience for thousands of festivalgoers.
