MBABANE– In an industry often criticized for prioritizing volume over value, one local powerhouse is standing firm on the principle of “quality over quantity.”

KingXKein, a collaborative force spearheaded by the multi-talented Wandile Nkambule (popularly known as Kein) and his partner Wakitsi Dlamini (better known as OG King), is carving a distinct path that seeks to elevate Eswatini’s music scene to international standards.

The duo is not just looking for a radio hit; they are building a lifestyle brand that prioritizes the listener’s journey through a holistic creative lens. Speaking on the group’s origins, Nkambule, who doubles as a songwriter, producer, and videographer, explained, “KingXKein is a collaborative group formed by Kein and OG King, two artists influenced a lot by the need to see and feel advancement and growth in the African music scene, but more especially in Eswatini.”

Their goal is to create an immersive experience that spans from the studio to high-quality merchandise and meticulously planned live events. “Our goal is to always create great sounding music and provide a good overall experience with our brands to all people who choose to engage and buy into the brands,” Nkambule noted.

Nkambule’s journey into the world of sound began at the age of 12, driven by a pure love for the process of creation. By the time he reached high school, he was already using music as a primary tool for self-expression. The true catalyst for the KingXKein movement occurred in 2020 when he crossed paths with Wakitsi Dlamini. The two artists immediately recognized a rare chemistry. “In 2020 is when I first met OG King. We really liked the chemistry we had between us and basically the overall vision of what good music can sound like,” he recalled.

The duo’s discography, though carefully curated, speaks volumes about their technical prowess. Tracks like the hard-hitting “Narcissist” have gained traction alongside fan favorites like “Ayi $uka” and “Six Gun.” Their music is often inspired by real-life events, painted with a “dark and eerie” aesthetic.

Regarding their creative direction, Nkambule stated, “With the KingXKein tapes we really just wanted to have fun. We wanted the music to sound dark and eerie, but not take itself too seriously at the same time. Reminiscent of the times hip hop artists used to drop mixtapes and just have crazy sounding records across them.”

Beyond the melodies, KingXKein carries a message of industry reform. Nkambule is a vocal advocate for collaboration, arguing that the “lone wolf” mentality holds the local scene back. “We came together in a sense to try to show other artists in the country that we can be stronger together, instead of worrying about all these things that aren’t getting anyone anywhere,” he emphasized.

As Nkambule approaches a decade in the industry next year, he reflects on his evolution: “I have way more experience now performing, writing and producing music now than I did when I began. I now have a lot more clarity about what artistic choices I make and why.” He added that he now specifically caters to the live performance factor, ensuring the music translates perfectly to the stage.

Looking toward the horizon, the duo has confirmed a second mixtape for the coming year. Their ambitions, however, extend far beyond the studio. “In the next few years I would like to keep working hard to see the KingXKein brand become a household name in pop culture in Africa and abroad,” Nkambule said.

Closing with a message to their supporters, he expressed profound gratitude: “They inspire us to want to be better and actually show the world that Swazi people are talented as well and can compete at the highest level in the entertainment industry.”
