MBABANE – The King’s Golf Cup has once again been hailed as a powerful driver of tourism development and economic growth in the Kingdom of Eswatini, reaffirming its status as one of the country’s most important sporting and tourism events.
Speaking during the unveiling of the new King’s Golf Cup Task Team, Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Hon. Jane Mkhonta-Simelane, highlighted the tournament’s long-standing contribution to national development, noting that the event was established in 2004 under the esteemed patronage of His Majesty the King with a clear vision of promoting tourism through golf.
“The King’s Cup Golf Tournament was established way back in 2004, under the esteemed patronage of His Majesty the King, with a clear objective of growing tourism through the sport of golf,” said Minister Mkhonta-Simelane.
Over the years, the tournament has grown into a flagship event on Eswatini’s national sporting and tourism calendar, attracting local and international golfers and spectators. According to the Minister, this growth is a testament to the commitment and dedication of the organising committees that have successfully hosted the tournament year after year.
“Since its inception, the tournament has grown in leaps and bounds, becoming a prestigious flagship event on our national sporting and tourism calendar,” she said.
The Minister emphasised that the King’s Golf Cup plays a critical role in stimulating the economy, particularly within the tourism and hospitality sectors. She explained that the influx of visitors during the tournament period significantly boosts demand for accommodation, food and beverages, transport services and other tourism-related offerings, directly benefiting local businesses.
Beyond tourism revenue, the tournament also creates employment opportunities. Preparations and execution of the event open doors for temporary jobs in event management, security, catering and hospitality, contributing to livelihoods and community development.
“This speaks directly to the Nkwe! mandate that we as Emaswati were given during Sibaya,” the Minister added, emphasizing government’s commitment to inclusive economic participation.
Minister Mkhonta-Simelane further noted that visitors attending the King’s Golf Cup often spend money on local goods, souvenirs and leisure activities, injecting additional income into the local economy and supporting small and medium enterprises.
On the international front, the tournament continues to place Eswatini on the global map. Media coverage and the participation of international golfers enhance the country’s image as an attractive tourist destination and help position it as a potential investment hub.
“The King’s Golf Cup provides a platform to showcase Eswatini to an international audience,” she said, adding that such exposure has long-term benefits for tourism growth and foreign investment.
The Minister also highlighted infrastructure development as another key benefit, noting that hosting major events such as the King’s Golf Cup can lead to improvements in roads and sporting facilities, leaving a lasting legacy for communities beyond the tournament itself.
As government appoints a new task team to steer the tournament forward, Minister Mkhonta-Simelane expressed confidence that the King’s Golf Cup will continue to grow from strength to strength, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of Eswatini’s tourism strategy and a catalyst for sustainable economic growth.
