BIG BEND – The sound of excitement filled Big Bend High School today as students explored their newly Upgraded ICT laboratory, a project that brings modern technology to their classrooms and opens doors to a world of opportunities.
The upgraded lab was officially unveiled by the Minister of Education and Training, Owen Nxumalo, together with Ubombo Sugar Limited Managing Director, Muzi Siyaya, marking a significant milestone for the Lubombo community.
Ubombo Sugar Limited invested E466,000 to transform the previously under-equipped facility into a modern digital learning hub. The laboratory now features 30 brand-new desktop computers, an HP Colour LaserJet printer, Microsoft Office 2024 software, a projector, and two 30,000 BTU air-conditioning units, ensuring students can learn in a comfortable, fully equipped environment. The project also included building renovations, fresh paint, floor tiling, and refurbished computer desks, creating a space that is both functional and inviting.
Minister Nxumalo said the new lab will give students the tools they need to thrive in a technology-driven world. “Access to modern ICT facilities is no longer a luxury but a necessity. This laboratory will help prepare our learners for higher education and future careers, while also encouraging creativity and digital literacy within the community,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of Ubombo Sugar, Muzi Siyaya emphasised the company’s commitment to education and local development. “Investing in schools is investing in the future of Lubombo. We are proud to provide students with a learning environment that will help them unlock their potential and embrace the opportunities that come with technology,” he said.
For the students, the upgraded ICT lab represents more than computers and new furniture. It is a space where they can practise skills, experiment with technology, and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow. The laboratory promises to enhance learning, foster innovation, and give the youth of Big Bend the digital tools they need to succeed in school and beyond.
