PIGG’S PEAK – Pigg’s Peak is currently undergoing a focused road maintenance programme aimed at improving accessibility, supporting economic activity, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents and visitors.
Speaking on the developments, Chief Executive Officer Roison Pave outlined the town’s progress, challenges, and future plans regarding infrastructure upgrades.
Road infrastructure remains a critical driver of economic growth in any developing town. Pave noted that past challenges linked to deteriorating roads have affected accessibility and increased operational costs for businesses and service providers. Despite these constraints, the town has demonstrated resilience, with businesses continuing to operate while working closely with the Council to improve conditions.
Historically, much of Piggs Peak’s road network consisted of gravel roads, which required frequent maintenance and became difficult to use during adverse weather.
Pave highlighted that the Central Government addressed this through key upgrades, including the transformation of the MR1 road into a bitumen-standard route, significantly improving connectivity.
Further improvements were supported through the 2012 Swaziland Local Government Project, financed by the World Bank, which helped address infrastructure gaps in developing towns like Piggs Peak. These efforts have strengthened accessibility and supported business activity.
Pave acknowledged that some businesses experienced reduced foot traffic due to road conditions, but expressed optimism that ongoing improvements will restore growth and confidence.
On tourism, Pave indicated that road conditions have affected travel, particularly for visitors using Matsamo and Bulembu border posts. He noted that buses and coaches often face delays due to challenging road surfaces.
However, he emphasized that government-led upgrades are expected within the next one to two years, which will significantly improve accessibility and travel comfort for tourists.
The Council has also entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Piggs Peak Hotel to strengthen tourism development. Engagements with the Ministry of Tourism are planned to position Piggs Peak as a regional tourism hub under an integrated development strategy.
Addressing residents’ concerns, Pave confirmed that damaged roads have increased vehicle maintenance costs and created transport challenges. He said the Council has conducted a socio-economic assessment and recognizes the importance of reliable roads for daily life and economic activity.
The Council is working closely with Ward Councillors and the Ratepayers Association to ensure community-driven solutions. A structured infrastructure maintenance plan, supported by a clear budget, is being implemented to improve service delivery.
Pave stated that key priorities include acquiring equipment, strengthening operational capacity, and enhancing maintenance efficiency. He expressed confidence that within 24 months, the town will experience significant transformation.
Regarding current projects, the CEO highlighted that the pothole patching programme in Glen Township forms part of a broader road rehabilitation initiative. The work includes pothole repairs, surface leveling, and safety improvements.
Recent work near Spar Mall was prioritized to support business activity by improving access for customers and suppliers.
The programme will be extended to other wards in phases, ensuring all priority areas are addressed systematically.
Pave commended the community for its patience and support, emphasizing that the ongoing infrastructure upgrades will result in a more accessible, safer, and economically vibrant Piggs Peak.
