MBABANE– The continued use of illegal firearms in the commission of crimes across Eswatini has become a growing concern for the Royal Eswatini Police Service.

Police say unlicensed and unlawfully possessed firearms continue to feature in violent crimes such as attempted murder, armed robbery, and other serious criminal activities, posing a major threat to public safety.

According to REPS, the use of illegal weapons has contributed to the loss of lives and increased insecurity in some communities.

Firearms Linked to Violent Crime

Authorities indicated that illegal firearms remain one of the key tools used by criminal elements involved in organised and violent offences. Such weapons are often difficult to trace and may circulate through unlawful channels, making investigations and crime prevention more challenging.

Police noted that the presence of these firearms increases the likelihood of deadly outcomes during robberies, domestic disputes, gang-related incidents, and other criminal acts. The continued circulation of illegal guns has therefore raised alarm among law enforcement agencies.

Public Urged to Report Illegal Weapons

The police have appealed to emaSwati to assist in combating the problem by reporting illegal firearms and suspicious activities in their communities. REPS said public cooperation is vital in helping authorities identify offenders, recover unlawful weapons, and prevent crimes before they occur.

Citizens have been encouraged to share any information that may assist investigations, with assurances that all reports will be treated in strict confidence. Police stressed that responsible citizenship and community vigilance remain key weapons in the fight against crime.

Campaign Against Crime Syndicates

The warning forms part of broader efforts by the police to dismantle criminal syndicates and reduce access to illegal weapons. Authorities say organised groups often rely on unlicensed firearms to commit robberies and intimidate victims, making the removal of such weapons a national priority.

The police continue to conduct operations targeting crime networks and individuals suspected of possessing firearms unlawfully.

Call for Safer Communities

REPS has urged residents to remain alert and work closely with law enforcement to create safer neighbourhoods.

Police said reducing the availability of illegal firearms would significantly lower levels of violent crime and help protect lives.

As efforts continue, authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to tackling criminal activity and ensuring that communities across Eswatini remain safe and secure.
