MBABANE – Fresh momentum is building within Eswatini’s sugar industry following a high-level regional summit convened by Standard Bank, bringing together key players to unlock growth, strengthen resilience, and expand market opportunities.

Held on Monday, May 4, 2026, the Regional Sugar Summit created a dynamic platform for industry leaders, financiers, and policymakers to engage on the future of one of the country’s most vital economic sectors.

The timing could not be more strategic. As the sugar industry continues to anchor the national economy, contributing up to 18% of GDP and supporting over 20,000 jobs, stakeholders are now focusing on innovative ways to sustain and grow its impact amid evolving challenges.

A central theme of the summit was unlocking smarter financing solutions. Participants highlighted the importance of expanding access to affordable credit, especially for smallholder farmers, to enable investment in modern equipment, irrigation, and productivity-enhancing inputs. With the right financial support, the sector is well-positioned to scale new heights.

Encouragingly, regional trade opportunities are also opening up. Discussions around the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) revealed strong potential for Eswatini to diversify export markets, boost competitiveness, and reduce dependence on traditional trading partners.

Climate resilience emerged as another area of opportunity. Stakeholders emphasized the growing adoption of climate-smart agriculture, including efficient irrigation systems, sustainable land use, and technology-driven farming. These innovations are already shaping a more adaptable and future-ready industry.

The overall outlook remains optimistic. With strengthened collaboration, improved financing models, and access to broader markets, Eswatini’s sugar industry is steadily positioning itself for long-term sustainability and growth.

The summit’s outcomes are expected to influence future investments and policy direction, further reinforcing the sector’s role as a cornerstone of national development.
