NKOMIYAHLABA –The Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, through the Microprojects Programme in partnership with Engineers in Action, officially handed over the 59-metre ESKOM Suspension Footbridge valued at E1.8 million during a ceremony led by Prince Maloyi II at Nkomiyahlaba to improve connectivity and safe movement between Vusweni and Nsingweni chiefdoms.
Government contributed E1.3 million towards the project, while Engineers in Action contributed E500 000 in support of rural infrastructure development and community empowerment.
The newly completed bridge is expected to benefit pupils, farmers and residents who previously faced difficulties crossing the area during rainy seasons. Community members are now expected to enjoy safer access to schools, healthcare services and economic activities.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Microprojects Director Sibusiso Mbingo said the project reflected strong collaboration between Government, development partners and communities in improving rural infrastructure.
“This bridge is a symbol of collaboration and commitment. It is our 39th bridge in Eswatini since 2017, and its can last for about 50 years , it also reflects the trust and support we continue to receive from emaSwati,” he said.
Mbingo said the bridge was completed within three months and thanked community leaders and residents for supporting the construction team throughout the project.
“We would like to thank their majesties , Government and the community for their support, as well as Hon. Mduduzi Dlamini for taking care of our workers during the construction process,” he added.
In reported remarks, Mbingo said Engineers in Action plans to construct eight more bridges across the country and implement water projects in selected schools to improve access to clean water.
Member of Parliament Hon. Mduduzi Dlamini welcomed the project and said it would improve daily life and create lasting benefits for the community.
The successful completion of the bridge highlights continued efforts by Government and partners to strengthen rural infrastructure and improve livelihoods across Eswatini.
